Patti Brooks
Patti Brooks is the former Director of Quality and Accreditation for Avera Health Plans. Her roots are in Health Information Management where she spent over 10 years working in various roles in hospitals and nursing homes. She then spent close to 23 years on the IT leadership team for Avera. She has served as an adjunct instructor and Assistant Professor at Dakota State University teaching courses in health information management, healthcare informatics, and information systems. Patti holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Administration from Dakota State University, an MBA from the University of South Dakota, and a Masters and Doctorate in Information Systems from Dakota State University. Patti is a past President of the South Dakota Health Information Management Association (SDHIMA) and was the first president of the South Dakota Chapter of the Health Information Management and Systems Society (SD Chapter of HIMSS). She has also served as the SDHIMSS Director for two years and has been involved in the SDHIMSS Program Committee since the beginning of the Chapter.

Renae Spohn PhD, MBA, RHIA, CPHI, CPHQ, FAHIMA, FNAHQ
Renae Spohn PhD, MBA, RHIA, CPHI, CPHQ, FAHIMA, FNAHQ, serves as Director of HIM Programs, Dakota State University and Coordinator of the MSHIIM program. Renae has been employed at DSU since January 2013 after having about 30 years of experience working in HIM, Quality, and clinical applications in acute care, long term care and home health corporate office level. She has served in many volunteer capacities including serving on the AHIMA Board of Directors from 2008-2010. She has also served as President of SDHIMA. She is a member of HIMSS, AHIMA, and NAHQ.

Erica Knippling
Erica Knippling has been in IT for over 20 years, specializing in healthcare IT for the last 15 years. Currently she serves as a Systems Engineer for Avera Health. Her previous roles include Clinical Information Specialist with the FSST Health Center and the Clinical Informatics Specialist at the Brookings Health System. In these roles she and her team were responsible for the design, implementation, and security of both the EMR and network infrastructures. Erica has been a member of SDHIMSS since 2012 and has served as President, President Elect, Past President, and Program Director. Erica received the SDHIMSS Leadership Award in 2014 and again in 2018 as well as the Distinguished Service Award from SDAHO in 2016.
Secretary
Julie Wulf Pimpton
Julie is a registered health information administrator (RHIA), as well as a certified professional in healthcare informatics (CHPI). She has served on the South Dakota Health Information Management (SDHIMA) Board of Directors and has been the President of SDHIMA. Julie also has served on the education committee for the South Dakota Healthcare Information and Management System Society (SDHIMSS). Julie teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs in health information management and health informatics programs at Dakota State University. Her classes include; Introduction to Health Information Management, Legal Aspects of Health Information I & II, Introduction to Healthcare Information Systems, Practical Coding Applications, Clinical Documentation Integrity, and several other graduate-level courses. Previous to coming to DSU, Julie has 30+ years of healthcare experience in health information management. She has experience as a clinic manager, project manager for an electronic health record software company, a consultant in HIM for a long-term care organization, and a director of HIM in an acute care hospital.

Communications Director
Brookes Noem
Brookes D. Noem has worked for the past 5 years for Sioux Falls based Avera Health, specifically as a Senior Systems Engineer for Avera Health Plans specializing in enterprise application management and performance. Overall, Brookes has worked in healthcare information technology for more than 12 years, including previous work at South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care and DAKOTACARE. In 2013 he earned a Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) degree from Dakota State University in Madison, SD, and added the Business Analytics graduate certificate in 2016. Prior to his healthcare information technology experience, Brookes also worked for 12 years as a technology professional in application development, database development and project management.

Corey B. Smith PhD
Corey B. Smith PhD is an assistant professor of pathology at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks, ND. Corey's work builds on more than 18 years of experience as a psychiatric epidemiologist and health informatics professional working across sectors to expand the research infrastructure needed to address the many complex challenges associated with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of the mental disorders in the rural US. In addition to epidemiology and public mental health, Corey's areas of research expertise include biostatistics, community-based participatory research, mixed methods research design, psychometrics, program evaluation, and, systems design and evaluation in health informatics.

Assumes the office of the president upon conclusion of the one-year term as president-elect. May be required to complete the unfulfilled term of the current Chapter President due to resignation or special circumstances.

Treasurer

Description

The treasurer has charge of and responsibility for all funds and securities of the Chapter, including oversight of deposits and disbursements. Duties shall be conducted in conformance with the approved budget, Chapter’s fiscal policies and any financial decisions previously made by the Board of Directors. The treasurer ensures that regular financial reports and an annual audit are presented to and interpreted for the Chapter Board of Directors and HIMSS.

Attend all regular and special meetings of the Board of Directors and notifies the president if unable.

Manage securing the deposit and disbursement of Chapter funds and investments. Maintain all required documents and financial records related to Chapters finance. Prepare a proposed budget for review, modification and final approval by the Chapter Board of Directors.

Monitor income and expense activity relative to the Chapter budget and makes appropriate recommendations to adjust for any variances. Prepare and submit necessary documents to comply with federal and state tax rules.

Maintain a treasurer's book of Chapter records, correspondence, and activities to be transferred to the incoming treasurer.

Perform any other duties necessary to further the business of the Chapter as duly directed by president and/or the Board of Directors.

Records all actions of the Chapter board and membership and prepares meeting minutes. Maintains Extranet site, which contains the permanent corporate record of the Chapter. Oversees Board of Directors elections and member surveys.

Attend all regular and special meetings of the Chapter Board of Directors, and notifies the president if unable to attend so that an interim secretary can be assigned.

Ensure that an annual (minimum) member survey is conducted. Arrange for conducting Board of Directors meetings, whether held in person or by conference call.

Record, prepare, and distribute the minutes via email in a timely fashion. Create, maintain, and archive electronic records containing notices, agendas, and related materials, in addition to the signed and approved minutes to Extranet site. Confirm Board of Directors candidates are eligible to run for office, prepares slate for election, communicates results to Board of Directors. Prepares ballots.

Lead the development and strategy for annual and event sponsorship plans. Act as primary contact with existing sponsors and solicit potential new sponsors.

Responsibilities

Attend all meetings of the Chapter Board of Directors.

Collaborate with the Chapter Board in identifying possible vendor sponsors. Reach out to potential sponsors and maintain relationships with current sponsors in order to retain and increase chapter funding, as well as vendor and member satisfaction.

Work with the program committee to ensure that sponsorship levels have adequate funding to support events, and that the vendors will be satisfied with events their sponsored events.

Ensure that chapter sponsors and logos are correctly identified and listed on website.

Lead an appropriate vendor and provider balance within the Chapter and at events. Work with the Chapter treasurer to ensure vendor sponsors are invoiced and submit funding for correct monetary amounts.
